Unfortunately, no. There was a bit of a barrier, and he was very preoccupied with owls. But he seemed rather as you would expect him. Quiet, a bit shy (or maybe just overwhelmed by the fan-girls and animals), nice. He almost seemed puzzled by all of the attention and enthusiasm.
I could just imagine the class of Hogwarts going to a field trip to observe muggles in which Harry, Hermione and surprisingly Neville are the only ones who know how to properly blend in with muggles . And omigosh you got to see Matthew Lewis in person!!!!
I was passing through York for a couple of days, was randomly handed a flyer on the street with the Railway Museum's event schedule on it, and noticed his name as a guest - booked for the following day. Well, I had my camera with me (on the way to the Fringe to enjoy the comedy and get a few good pictures of Edinburgh), and I guess my friend and I looked just barely professional enough (or maybe it's because we were a bit older than many of the fans) that we weren't herded into the autograph line, but ended up on the other side of the cordon with the media. It was sheer luck. Magic, perhaps.
Not too far from that. If I remember right, we were in York for a few days on my way to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and someone handed my friend a flyer for the Train Museum. She was about to put it in the bin when I saw Matthew Lewis' name on it, and the next morning's date, and shouted out 'It's Neville! Neville's here!'
Needless to say, she had to change her plans for the next morning, because I dragged her and my camera along to the event. He was there, along with one of the movie's bird trainers and some of the more famous birds; Hedwig, Pigwidgeon, the model for the hippogriff, etc. He was a bit shy (Matthew, I mean, not the hippogriff), but very polite and sweet and accommodating to we obnoxious amateur photographer/fans... much like his character. They certainly cast him well!
You never know! I certainly never expected to be able to meet him. Sometimes life is very good at throwing you into great situations. I hope you do get a chance to meet him someday (less the dying, of course)!
