Here's another play on mythological imagery, though this time I've overstepped the boundaries of reality more than a little bit.
After many hours of trying to match up a man and horse (I have a whole new respect for artists who depict centaurs, fawns, mermaids, etc.), here is my centaur, Chiron.
As science and exploration haven't revealed centaurs on our planet (yet!), I have taken a cue from Anne McCaffrey and set him on another world; appropriately, in the Triffid nebula somewhere in the vicinity of the constellation Sagittarius (I think).
I will leave the scene up to the viewer's imagination - that is part of the charm of fantasy art. It exercises the imagination.
Drawn in coloured pencil on 11" x 14" Bristol board.

EDIT, as of April 1st, 2011: I'm pleased to announce that The Centaur was chosen as First Place winner of the Unique Themes Fantasy Contest [link] ! Many thanks!
I <3 Anne McCaffrey!!!! Have you read her book Acorna? She did something similar, only she was half unicorn, half human; more human than unicorn though.

oh man, this is awesome! Currently reading through CoN: Prince Caspian - and this is what i picture the centaurs looking like. Very graceful and strong. The sort of exploding nebula behind him is fantastic! Amazing what can be done with colored pencil!

(Great book, by the bye. I'm honoured to have this work associated with it.)
